Owners strive to make Saugatuck's Bloomin' nursery a unique destination

SAUGATUCK TOWNSHIP — An old blue Chevrolet pickup with the words “Bloomin’ on Blue Star” welcomes visitors to the Lakeshore’s newest plant and flower nursery.

Opened this spring by brothers Dan and Rich Schwartz, Bloomin’ is probably the only area nursery that also has a women’s clothing and accessory boutique as part of its offering.

“It’s a rather unique combination, but that’s what we want Bloomin’ to be — a unique destination that is an adventure,” said nursery co-owner Dan Schwartz, whose daughter Paige Schwartz runs the women’s store called 1 Happy Girl Boutique.

Both businesses share quarters on three acres at 3291 Blue Star Highway, although the nursery operation takes up the bulk of the space.

“We bought the property about three years ago and have been working on getting it the way we wanted it,” said Dan Schwartz, who now lives in the area and oversees the nursery operation with son Clarke Schwartz. “It’s still a work in progress, but it’s looking real good now.”

This is the third business that brothers Dan and Rich Schwartz have started. They also are partners in an auto repair shop, DanRich Collision in Homer, Ill., and Better Lawns and Gardens in Lemont, Ill.

“I was moving here and needed something to do with myself, so we decided to look for a nursery operation,” said Dan Schwartz, who calls the operation of the business a family affair.

The 1 Happy Girl Boutique features new versions of retro-style women’s clothes, jewelry, shoes and accessories.

“I call it ‘vintage-meets-trendy,’” said Paige Schwartz, 21, who opened her first Happy Girl Boutique in Lemont while a college student. “I thought the Bloomin’ would be a good spot for the boutique because the nursery draws a lot of women customers that can stop in.

“Plus, it is also a standalone store,” she said, noting the store is designed to match accessories for a dress or outfit for someone from the shoes up.

The nursery offers an assortment of flowers and plants, including perennials, annuals, vegetables, flowers and shrubs and trees.

Instead of sitting in trays and rows, the plants are presented in both garden settings, so buyers can see what they look like planted, and on large garden cart displays to show them off.
