Today's guest blogger: How I spent my winter vacation

Access to potable water is a huge problem in rural India. Abheypur has no water system and electricity for a maximum of 3 hours on most days -- except for monsoon season when electricity was out for several days. In a rural village of roughly 3,000 people, most villagers have to walk long distances to procure water from the few government wells or ask the few people lucky enough to have a well for water. We were welcomed as rock stars in the village. The children followed us everywhere and the adults invited us in for chai every day. Our involvement was meant to start a sustainable system that the villagers will supervise and maintain on their own. Local neighborhood water committees collect monthly fees for expenses and maintenance. The goal is to have enough money to replace major parts in three years and to replace the entire system if needed in 10 years. We supply the technology and training and the villagers supply the labor and contribute to the purchase of equipment.

It is remarkable what people of good will -- young, old, Catholic, Protestant, Atheist, Hindi -- can accomplish. It’s the type of challenge that makes you want to jump out of bed every morning and dig in.

It was easy for me to get involved, since I have spent a lifetime volunteering, including voter registrations and civil rights in the '60s, church folk group and anti war in the '70s, and progressive political and environmental causes since.

Well presented 70m2 one bedroom penthouse with 60m2 terrace (with spectacular views on Pinhal golf course), situated on the second (top) floor, in Condominium Solar do Golfe.

This penthouse consists of a hallway with built-in closet, leading into a living room area with fireplace and south-east and south-west facing terraces. Further a modern fully equipped kitchen, a double bedroom with built-in wardrobes and a bathroom with bath. The property is recently refurbished and benefits from good quality finishings: air-conditioning, double glazed windows, mosquito screens and shutters. Mains water, gas and electricity, telephone connection, satellite television, WIFI, security gate, 24 hrs closed circuit security TV system and allocated parking place.

The apartment is located in a small privately owned closed condominium, adjacent to Pinhal golf course, and is looked after by an on-site manager. The grounds are lovely, well-maintained and spacious, with two swimming pools and lots of grassy areas, sun loungers, trees and plants. It is a quiet and peaceful location; walking distance from the marina.

The on-site manager is available on a daily basis. There is a housekeeper who will check and air your apartment on a weekly basis and can be hired for cleaning and laundry. All external maintenance is inclusive of condominium fees.
