The accident cost the Lackovics everything they had worked for, including their income, family and friends. “Everything and everybody just went. They couldn’t take it. They couldn’t see me like that,” Lackovic said. “I had to start over again a new life as a totally different person. It took that but my dream came true.” “The work does stand on its own, but then when you do know what the person has been dealing with, it adds a whole new layer,” Krupp said. Challenges the artists face include painting with their non-dominant hand or sculpting without the benefit of eyesight. One artist with cerebral palsy paints by holding the brush between his head and shoulder, while others have learned to adapt to being color blind. “You don’t see the limitations in the quality of their work,” Krupp said. “You see a different part of the world expressed or focused on.” The All About Art exhibition is an advocacy event rather than a fundraiser. Artists receive 80 percent of their sale proceeds while the remaining 20 percent allows MossRehab to continue hosting the show. This year’s show also benefits the Voices of MossRehab Aphasia Center. Admission to the show is free, and artwork prices range from around $50 to $3500, according to Krupp. “We want to showcase people with disabilities because we want the world to know that doesn’t mean they are completely disabled, and in fact they have abilities we don’t,” Krupp said. “Most able-bodied people don’t have these abilities.” Some visitors have reservations about attending an art exhibition in a rehabilitation facility, where they may encounter amputees or people in wheelchairs, Krupp said. “Once you’re in there and surrounded by this work, it’s not depressing,” Krupp said. “The work is not an expression of loss; it’s an expression of gift and vision and a kind of passion about living that I think these artists especially have to have. Whatever obstacles people may have about getting there, it is well worth doing because it is a joy.” Lackovic’s own story testifies to joy overcoming sorrow. He said that he never felt sorry for himself, but instead he seeks ways to give back to others. “I just want people to know that if you think you’ve lost everything, don’t even think about it,” Lackovic said. “You’re better off, because those things just hold you down. Everything always works out for the best; you just have to make that choice in your head.” Just as he learned a new way of thinking after his accident, Lackovic experiments with new ways of creating texture and dimension in his largely abstract artworks. He makes his own paint, grinding crystals and other substances, and considers how his colors reflect light in order to achieve an illuminated effect. Some of his pieces appear to be a half-inch deep, but when people touch them they realize they are flat, Lackovic said. Lackovic’s artwork is available at Victoria James Designs, 144 W.
