Avoid traffic, fish the riprap for a big catch

When fishing for bass this time of year, get away from summer traffic on the water by fishing the rip-rap.

Find these areas near dams or bridges having  a steep bank with close access to deep water and a current — all recipes for success when bass fishing. Within the riprap, there is ideal habitat for crawfish as well as other baitfish that come in from deeper water to feed on the algae.

Bass, being opportunistic feeders, move into the riprap looking for easy meals of this type of prey. Try crankbait for fishing riprap, but when bass are holding deeper than a crank bait will dive, try switching to a 3/4-ounce spinnerbait with two willow leaf blades. Professional fisherman, Ken Cook puts the spinner bait fitted with blue and metal flake colors to match the baitfish over the top by adding a Berkley PowerBait  4-inch Bungee Twin Tail Grub letting the heavy spinnerbait sink to the bottom, then fish it with a hop-and-stop retrieve that bounces off the rocks. Early morning and late evening hours are best when there’s less traffic and both weather and water are a bit cooler.

All anglers with tournament approved boats are welcome to fish one tournament as a non-member, then pay the $15 annual fee ($10 each additional family member) plus $30 tournament fees plus options. Be sure you have a live well adequate to keep bass alive and in good condition. • Yuma Valley Rod and Gun Club: Combo Bass/Catfish Derby — call Billy Morgan at 210-2478. For fishing details, attend the July 6 Dinner/Meeting and Fun Auction at 6:30 p.m., open to everyone interested in hunting and fishing and the outdoors, at American Legion Hall, 2575 Virginia Dr. Club members are urged to bring a variety of items for the auction. • Wildlife Treatment Center: A Emergency Center staffed by Game and Fish wildlife veterinarians and rehabilitation experts is set up at the Springerville-Eagar Rodeo Grounds to aid wildlife affected by the fires in Arizona. Other wildlife rehab centers are also assisting . To report orphaned or injured wildlife call the wildlife Emergency hotline at 623-236-7242. Anyone wishing to assist in this can visit the Adobe Mountain Wildlife Auxiliary website at www.azwildlifecenter.net. • Bull elk killed: $1,500 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the unlawful, out of season  poaching and killing of the bull near Paulden, AZ. Matt Pefto, wildlife manager of Game and Fish Region 111 in Kingman reported “The animal was skinned and head removed”. If someone saw or has heard anything, they are encouraged to provide information to the OGT hotline at 800-352-0700. It is hoped someone overheard a conversation, saw a vehicle on the scene or witnessed the poaching.

Hi can you tell me when I grow plants from seed can I feed the baby seedlings and what is the best thing to feed them on and at what age of seedlings do I start to feed them thanks Frank

What are you growing and what kind of soil do you have, get a soil test, safest case scenario is to have grown you seedlings in potting soil with feed already in it, and then transplant it to a good compost, derived of green and brown. Really shouldn’t need any other feed than that. If it’s tomatoes and I grow 3 to 5 hundred plants a year, I dig a hole a foot deep and mix one shovel of this compost with one shovel of soil, then plant the tomato or say pepper, egg plant etc. deeper than the first leaves, this gives the plant a boost in root system as it can grow roots all along where you buried it. That way it picks up any available food and moisture a shallow planted one couldn’t.
