Phoenix Rising: The Rebirth of Palestinian Soccer

This past Sunday, the Palestine Nationals tied Afghanistan 1-1 in an early first round 2014 World Cup Qualifying match. By most accounts, it was not an impressive game for Team Palestine, but it did ensure that they would move on to face their next opponent, Team Thailand. For those who are still celebrating Spain's victory last Summer in South Africa, talk about the 2014 World Cup seems premature. That said, this past week of matches across Asia did not go unnoticed by those who have spent the past decade transfixed on the growing strength of Asian soccer and its national teams, many of whom only a decade earlier were considered minor players on soccer's international stage.

A case in point, Team Palestine, a squad that played its first FIFA international in 1998. That year, the Palestinians would enter international play ranked 191 in the world.

The 1998 decision to grant the Palestinians national team status within FIFA was not without controversy occurring only after the establishment of the Palestinian Authority. In July 1998, a Palestinian side played their first series of internationals against squads from Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. A year later, under the direction of the great Arab-Israeli coach, Azmi Nassar, the Palestinian Nationals won the bronze medal at the Pan-Arab Games losing only to Jordan in the final round. Along the way, Palestine knocked off Qatar, Syria and the UAE - no small feat. These successes should have been seen as a precursor of things to come, however, few soccer experts took notice. During the period between 2000 and 2002, while attempting to gain a qualifying berth in both the Asian Games as well as the 2002 World Cup, the disadvantaged Palestinians knocked off two solid national teams representing Malaysia and Hong Kong. Again the victories should have set off bells and whistles in soccer circles. Yet again, the soccer world remained silent. By 2006, while most soccer experts focused on the World Cup Qualifying rounds and the more established European and South American powerhouse teams, few noticed the Palestinians who had, in less than eight years, move up on the FIFA world ranking from 191 to 115 - within striking range of a WCQ berth. The proverbial Phoenix, that epitomized Palestinian soccer, was rising. No longer could teams afford to assume an easy contest against such an unpredictable Palestinian opponent.

Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends maintains the hallmarks of the first RTS in the franchise (attrition, non-depletable resources, national borders) while improving on gameplay mechanics such as city building and large scale battles. The sequel differs from its predecessor in that it takes place in a steampunk universe spanning autumn-dotted hills in the lands of the Vinci to blinding sandstorms in the burning deserts of the magical Alin. At the furthest reaches of the continent, hidden in the deepest jungles, lie the stone stepped pyramids of the brutal religious zealots known as the Cuotl. Through the Conquer the World (CTW) campaign players strategically guide a tightly knit group of heroes across the continent pursing monsters, love interests, power, and vengeance. Rise of Legends also sports a Quick Battle (QB) component so players can jump right in to the action by selecting a map and one of the three unique races. The player’s final test of skill is to go head to head on Gamespy or LAN to explore the radically different strategies of the slow but god-like Cuotl, the fast but glass-like Alin, or the innovative but even-keel Vinci.
