In an era of self-service retail business owners in Vancouver and Alan Amy O'Hara said customer service and custom fit are key to the growth of their chain shoe store small.
So far, these notions of the old school seem to bring customers running for years two pairs of Vancouver When the Shoe Fits stores. Their business model is based on two O'Haras experience - his as a certified pedorthist, shoe salesman and former Nordstrom shoe buyer, and his own, including a sales training shoes and experience working for a manufacturer shoe wholesaler.
The O'Haras are set to open a third store in September in the Grand Central complex off Highway 14 Retail State and Columbia House Boulevard.
Seeing professional contractors working on the store reminds Alan O'Hara far the company has come since When the Shoe Fits opened in 2004 next to the Whole Foods supermarket in East Vancouver.
"We painted the store ourselves, until three in the morning," he said.
Amy insists Alan confidence and attention to detail have fueled the growth of the company.
To develop a business plan, he enlisted the help of the United StatesSCORE Small Business Administration.
After three months of business planning, the couple pitched their business idea of shoes to about 20 banks before landing a small business loan.
"Everyone said it was a good idea, we just do not have enough capital," said Alan O'Hara.
When it came to hiring staff, O'Hara, both 43, for shoe salesmen looked experienced, according to Amy O'Hara. The stores now employ about 15 people,
She compared the service model shop in a decades-old tradition of custom fit boots.
"This is exactly what we're trying to do with each client," she said.
The O'Hara, long resident in Clark County, have done their due diligence in deciding where to open their third store.
