"The plots are just excuses for writing great," said study author Nicolas Christenfeld, a professor of social psychology at UC.
"What is the plot is (almost) irrelevant. The fun is in writing.

To prove that it is good to know Megan is in fact the housewife Angela Catfish, Prof. Christenfeld and his colleague Jonathan Leavitt ran three experiments on the 12 short stories read by at least 30 people.
The stories were divided into twist, the mystery ironic and literary categories, and included works by specialists surprises such as Agatha Christie, Roald Dahl, Raymond Carver and John Updike.
Some of the subjects were given stories to read as they were intended. Other versions have been provided with a spoiler in the beginning paragraph of the story or paragraph fin inserted well before the pay-off.
They then asked how much they enjoyed the stories and their responses classified as hedonic scores.
Here are the results:
- A short story written in 1889 on a bank that offers two million rubles to a lawyer if he can spend 15 years in solitary confinement - comes off worse when you know the lawyer out of prison five minutes earlier.
Some spoilers are not always going to be welcome. The result of a football game, for example. Or a text message from a co-worker yelled to alert you of your boss in terms that gives you when you get this morning.
But when it comes to artwork, Christenfeld Leavitt and that it can be easier to appreciate Star Wars without all that stuff about being a father Darth Vader Luke sully the purity of the vision of George Lucas.
"So it could be that once you know how it turns out, it is cognitively easier," says Prof. Leavitt.
"You are more comfortable processing information - and can concentrate on a better understanding of history."
This information might come as some relief for someone who has little accidentally "ruined" by the end of another forthcoming book on the must-read list - or pretended to laughter.

Everyone is in a frenzy after the last Harry Potter film Harry Potter came out.
