Last School Project of the Year—Making Paper Mâché
It was the last school project of the year for the third grade, part of an overall Los Angeles Unified School District curriculum to teach children about money, bartering and numbers. For the project, children were to make colorful, handcrafted piggy banks out of balloons with a covering of papier-mâché.
At Valley View Elementary Schoo l, teacher Meghan Hanlon had the papier-mâché paste all ready to go, parent volunteers cut up strips of newspaper, other parents had brought in toilet-paper rolls for noses and feet, but someone forgot the balloons that form the shape of the piggies.
Well, luckily, some Patch balloons were available, and saved the project. The piggy banks were colorfully painted and looked great. Unfortunately, to get the banks to work, they had to be popped, but it was fun.
After making the banks, the children made items to barter and sell. They included mini comic books, bracelets, fortune tellers, bizarre paper figurines and other items that they traded with each other.

The wire form is then hung from the roof with wire and then covered with strips of paper soaked in flour and water glue. Successive layers of paper are added to add strength to the form and then the whole thing is covered in white paper.
She dropped in at the Citizen offices last week to show off some examples of the papier mache work. The idea was to make a bowl of some sort so, instead of the common practice of moulding paper mush around balloons, her Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 students

To make basic paper mache you need three basic things. Paper, some form of mold and some kind of paste. For paper you can use:
Regular glue mixed with glue. One part water to two parts glue. Wallpaper paste. Just follow directions and use a drop less water than instructed. If too thick add bit more water Liquid starch Mix one part flour with about 2 parts of water until you get a consistency like thick glue. Add more water or flour as necessary. Mix well to get out all the bumps. Add a few tablespoons of salt to help prevent mold!If you don’t like any of these mixtures you can even use strips of adhesives from the medical supply store, just wet them and apply.

Instructions:
A pulp mixture is great for making smooth, fine details in your paper mache creations, or for creating small objects. It would, take a lot of it to complete a larger project.Tear the newspaper into tiny pieces and put them in a large bowl. Add just enough warm to hot water to completely cover the newspaper. Let soap overnight.
Once your newspaper has soaked for several hours, get your hands into it! Play with it, mix it, and squeeze it through your fingers until it looks like oatmeal! Try to get as many lumps out as possible. If necessary, add a bit more water and let it soak a little more.
Once you have it as smooth as possible, add a few tablespoons of salt to help retard mold. Mix it again with your hands. Once mixed thoroughly, squeeze out any excess water and add a few tablespoons of glue. Now you are ready to use your paper mache pulp. Form jewelry, ornaments, etc. After drying, objects may be painted with acrylic paints.
