Arab World Fest canceled for 2011, 2012
Arab World Fest, Milwaukee's annual celebration of Arab culture, has been canceled for 2011 and 2012 because it would fall during Ramadan, the holy month during which Muslims - who represent the majority participants - are required to fast during the day.
"We worked with Summerfest to find alternative dates, but it just didn't work out," Arab World Fest President Ihsan Atta said Wednesday. "We're looking at other, smaller events we can do to keep the festival fresh in people's minds" until it resumes in 2013, he said.
Arab Fest has traditionally been held on Milwaukee's Summerfest grounds in August. Organizers have known for years that it would eventually collide with Ramadan, which occurs earlier each year because the lunar calendar on which it's based is several days shorter than the traditional western calendar.
"We thought it would happen last year, but we just missed it," said Atta.
A festival during Ramadan is problematic because the majority of vendors and visitors are Muslim, who would generally not eat until sundown each day. And though non-Muslim attendance has grown each year, visitors would not be enough to sustain the festival during the two years, Atta said.
