Love Story | A prayer for a partner is answered

Becky French believed the right man was out there. So when a friend invited her to come to church that Easter in 2000 to meet Lindsey Kroenke, Becky agreed. </p><p>Lindsey was a 39-year-old single dad with shared custody of his 9-year-old daughter. Since his divorce, he&#x92;d been on a number of unsuccessful coffee dates and was ready to give up on relationships.</p><p>His first meeting with Becky, then 34, was brief and uneventful. A week later, Lindsey called Becky, and they talked for a while. </p><p>&#x93;The conversation flowed,&#x94; Becky says. &#x93;We laughed and had a good time.&#x94;</p><p>&#x93;Becky understood how important my daughter was to me,&#x94; Lindsey says. &#x93;I was willing to open myself up to her.&#x94;</p><p>Their first dinner together was the romantic evening Becky had always dreamed of.</p><p>&#x93;Lindsey took my breath away,&#x94; Becky says. </p><p>&#x93;It was like we were old friends,&#x94; Lindsey says.</p><p>Becky felt so wonderful that she got scared of being hurt. So she canceled their next date. Lindsey took her behavior in stride. Three weeks later, he called and left her a nice message. </p><p>&#x93;I was so relieved to hear from him,&#x94; she says. </p><p>After their next date, Becky knew, &#x93;I had to marry this guy.&#x94; </p><p>&#x93;That date was a turning point for me,&#x94; Lindsey says. &#x93;Becky was so caring, honest and understanding.&#x94;</p><p>They began seeing each other almost every day. Many times, they included Lindsey&#x92;s daughter. Their relationship deepened and Lindsey made plans to propose on his birthday, which was on Thanksgiving that year. He purchased a ring and let his family in on the surprise.</p><p>Thanksgiving evening, Lindsey, Becky and his family walked over to the Plaza for the lighting ceremony. At the count of seven, Lindsey, as planned, dropped to one knee and proposed. But Becky couldn&#x92;t hear him above the noise of the crowd, and she thought he&#x92;d fallen down.</p><p>He asked again, opening the ring box. Becky cried with joy as his family popped champagne corks and threw confetti.</p><p>They were married on July 14, 2001. Today, they live in Kansas City with their 8-year-old son. Becky is an instructional coach for the Park Hill School District. Lindsey is a hairdresser at Hair salon in Westport.</p><p>They believe they met at the right moment.</p><p>&#x93;When I stopped praying for a specific person and started praying for a partner, Becky came into my life,&#x94; Lindsey says. </p><p>&#x93;He supports me in whatever I do,&#x94; Becky says. &#x93;I love his kindness, his humor and his honesty. I feel so lucky to be with him.

“I know how I’m going to die. It's going to come soon. I saw it in a dream - a premonition. I know, I don’t believe in that stuff, but I had a dream, there was a gun, and then the next week my grandfather showed me the guns he was going to leave me when he was going to die. I fucking hate guns, so I had no idea why he was doing this and then when he showed me, I knew. It was my dream. He showed me the gun from my dream that I was going to take, and shoot myself with. It was the exact same one. It felt like the moment before you push an unsuspecting child out from in front of a train, getting yourself run over in the process. It was mournful, weighted, but there was a sense of complete resolve. This was what was to happen and I was now just the vessel to carry out the action of The Universe." I was at the end of my line. My relationship with the love of my life, at the time, had ended horribly less than a year previously and I was not able to work through it. I dropped out of the university where I had been doing well and thriving, but racked up $700 in parking tickets and spent all my money on illicit pleasures rather than paying my account off. As a result, I had spent some weeks homeless; my mom left my dad for a physically abusive meth-head; and I had no prospects for the future besides an imminent jail sentence for drunkenly driving my car into a fireworks tent as a joke. I wanted to die. And I let my subconscious act as enabler. I would have done it, I would have lived out some kind of mystical experience I had yearned for since jr. high reading Ginsberg and Kerouac. But, Mary saved my life. I started dating Mary in the summer. Our romance began the moment I met her. We were at a coffee house. The same one my friends Andy and Kris had been bringing me to for some time to try to find someone new to mend my broken heart. At the time I had taken to carrying an old liquor case that was halfway between a bowling bag and a briefcase and had one half reserved for a liquor bottle and the other half adorned with steel goblets. I was inebriated by the time I got there and don’t remember much of what transpired. What I am aware of after the fact is that I invited some strangers – Mary and her best friend, among others – back to my house, along with the friends I had been there with. We stopped by the local grocery store on the way so I could procure more liquor and we went to my room to celebrate.
