When I was young and living just outside Paris, I became obsessed with the odd, exquisite and endangered, which included the haute couture ateliers that I’d only read about in books. Fashion houses are allowed to use feathers only from birds that are not endangered, and most are from fowl that we eat. This is what couture’s all about, protecting something that is threatened: an appreciation for beauty and slow, precise work. There were no lyrebird feathers, like those in Daisy Fellowes’s day, but there were ostrich, turkey and pheasant dyed and decorated to be equally as enchanting. It was all perfect for Valli’s girls, like Bianca Brandolini d’Adda and Tatiana Santo Domingo. A cool troupe of them arrived at the show dressed in yellow, chartreuse and purple mixed with his signature leopard.
