The Power of The Blessing
According to authors and Christian counseling experts, John Trent and Gary Smalley, the reality is that many families operate under a banner that communicates a lack of unconditional love and acceptance, leaving children and spouses with deep-seated insecurity and a profound lack of self-worth and wellbeing. Their answer to this problem, first articulated in 1986, is found in their book, The Blessing , revised and updated by Thomas Nelson in 2011.When my review copy arrived, I thought back on how powerfully the original edition had impacted me when I first read it in the early 1990s. With a husband, two young sons and a brand new Christian faith, I was eager to learn how we could overcome generational patterns of conditional love and acceptance and learn how to be a family that spoke blessings into each others’ lives.
The premise of the book is that God has given us a Biblical understanding of how vital it is to have the blessing of our families in the Old Testament histories of families like Isaac, Rebekah, and their sons Esau and Jacob. The assumption of the book is that, “The family blessing provides that much-needed sense of personal acceptance…freeing people to develop intimate relationships…[and] lays the foundation for a genuine and fulfilling relationship with God that can survive even the rocky teen years, when many young people pull away from faith.” The book asserts that having such a blessing is a birthright that all people need to receive to be able to have proper self-worth and healthy adult relationships. In the decades since I first read this book, I have used many of its Biblical techniques and found them very helpful, especially the one in which “word pictures” are explained as tools to clearly communicate love and surmount defenses in an emotionally discouraged spouse or child. But it is God who provides the motivation and the power to keep repenting of generationally sinful habits and intentionally practice unconditional love and forgiveness in family life.
