La. attorney general challengers, Foti clash

Royal Alexander

Gannett News Service

Royal Alexander believes he can restore public trust in state government as attorney general by aggressively fighting corruption and cronyism among elected officials.

Alexander, a 40-year-old Republican, said he would form an anti-corruption unit within the Attorney General's Office to look into the activities of Louisiana politicians. Alexander made his comments this past week during an interview with the editorial board of The News-Star in Monroe.

"Voters in this state are very fed up with that," Alexander said. "In our state, the perception of corruption is as corrosive as anything to the people's faith in state government."

Alexander, the former chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, (no relation) is a Shreveport native who also was an aide for U.S. Rep. Clyde Holloway, R-Forest Hill. He has worked as a lawyer and administrative law judge for the state division of administrative law and clerked for U.S. District Judge Rebecca Doherty.

He is a graduate of Louisiana State University at Shreveport and received his law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law.

Alexander said his background in insurance law has prepared him to address the problems policyholders have had surrounding hurricane-related insurance claims.

Asked about his opinion on the events involving the "Jena Six," Alexander said the controversy is because "people are incensed because they believe one group is getting better treatment than another."

"Everyone is entitled to the same process," he said.

Charles Foti Jr.

Staff and wire reports

Charles C. Foti Jr. has stated that if re-elected as Louisiana attorney general, he will stress advocacy of the elderly and continue to work to fight against computer and Internet crime, fraud and violence against children.

The 70-year-old Democrat is completing his first term as the state's top legal authority, a post he has held since 2004. Before serving as the AG, Foti served 30 years as the sheriff of Orleans Parish as well as an attorney for local, state and federal agencies.

In June, Foti made a trip to Alexandria to announce the newly formed Central Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force -- the third such state task force he had announced.

State finds nursing home committed medication errors | Louisiana ...

Nursing home residents can suffer great harm when their facilities make medication errors. Examples of such errors include: giving a resident an incorrect medication, giving a resident an incorrect dose of a medication and failing to give a resident a medication that he or she is supposed to receive. Sadly, such errors can sometimes even result in a resident's death . Thus, it is very important for nursing homes to do everything they reasonably can to try to prevent these types of errors.

Recently, the results were released of a state investigation in Minnesota that found that a nursing home in that state committed medication errors. One of the matters this investigation involved related to a woman who was a resident of the nursing home. The woman reportedly began her stay at the nursing home on January 14, 2010. She died of cardiac arrest later that month.

Reportedly, the state investigation found that while the woman was at the nursing home, she did not receive potassium-replacement medication that she was supposed to. According to the investigation, this mistake occurred because of "transcription errors" made at the nursing home. Allegedly, this medication error was connected to the woman's death.

As this matter underscores, nursing home residents can suffer great harm when their facilities make medication errors. Such mistakes can even put a resident's life at risk. Consequently, one hopes that nursing homes will do everything they reasonably can to ensure that their residents aren't exposed to medication errors like those reported in the Minnesota investigation.
