Senior Daniel Calaman has been presented the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence Award by the Exchange Club of Carlisle. The award is presented to high school students who have overcome physical, emotional or social challenges and gone on to achieve personal and academic success. Calaman received a plaque and a $500 check to help with college expenses. Graduating seniors Phillip Harlan and Zachery Kanneg were awarded Presidential Scholarships by the McCann School of Business and Technology. Graduating senior Letizia Bates was awarded an Academic Excellence Scholarship by the McCann School of Business and Technology.

CUMBERLAND VALLEY

Several Monroe Township residents spoke before the school board to express their concerns about kindergarten cutbacks. Superintendent William Harner said that after the elimination of one kindergarten class, the resulting class sizes are below that of the district threshold for numbers of students. Harner said that although Monroe Elementary’s extended-day program had been eliminated, any kindergartner who needed it would be offered combined morning and afternoon sessions, which together exceed the class time of an extended day. The Good Hope Middle School jazz band performed for the school board before the meeting, and band conductor Craig Stahl was presented with a commendation certificate from the band. Eagle View Elementary sixth-grader Anne Slovin spoke of her love of books and concerns about plans to eliminate librarians from CV elementary schools. According to officials, elementary school libraries will be fully operational and staffed by library aides. A Junior ROTC field trip for five days and four nights to Camp Odyssey in Boswell was approved for nine cadets as part of the program’s requirement for its leadership course. There was no cost to the district. Frances Carothers, Dan Hunsecker and Deborah Petersen-Stutzman were approved as homebound instructors/tutors. Graduating high school seniors Renae Treichler and Richard Karns have been awarded Presidential Scholarships by the McCann School of Business and Technology.

Helen Walsh , a junior, advanced to the National History Day Competition in Washington, D.C., held on June 14, after receiving second place at the Pennsylvania State History Day competition.
