‘Waders,” says Johnny Wealleans in his caramel Geordie brogue.

“You’ll need waders.” Johnny comes highly recommended. There is no better person, I am told by the PR man for Hardy’s of Alnwick, for which Johnny has worked for the past 15 years, and which is to fishing what Fortnum & Mason is to picnic hampers, to show me the art of fly-fishing. “He’s a character.”

Even on the phone it doesn’t take long to establish that fact. Waders are necessary, says Johnny, because the North Tyne, the river on which my angling baptism is to be, is deep in places, deeper certainly than wellington boots can cope with. Best, adds Johnny, with what sounds like a chuckle in his voice, to get waders that are chest-high. In my mind’s eye I see water swirling around my neck.

My quest for waders takes me to the Glasgow Angling Centre, which describes itself as a “fishing megastore”. Early one dank morning it is jumping with men of a certain age wandering up and down the aisles in search of the wherewithal to fox fish. There are rods and reels, hooks and flies in their thousands, each designed for a specific purpose and particular conditions.

A kindly assistant takes me under his wing and leads me to a section devoted to waders. When he’s not working, he says, he is fishing. The two seem indistinguishable.

He’d spent the weekend “up north” on a loch where he did not get so much as a nibble let alone catch anything. If he is disappointed he doesn’t let on. Being out in the open air is what’s important. Occasionally, he says, he just sits on the bank and watches a river flow by for hours on end, which is a wonderful way to get the city out of your system.

In any case, virtually everything he catches he throws back. Sometimes the same fish is caught dozens of times. Benson, the “king of common carps”, was caught by more than 60 anglers in a Cambridgeshire lake. When he died in 2009, at the age of 25, he was mourned the world over, like a prematurely dead rock star.
