1 killed, 3 life flighted in major weekend crashes
SCOTT TWP. — A Berks County man driving a utility vehicle on State Route 768 was killed Saturday when his vehicle rolled over, pinning him beneath it.According to the police report filed by state trooper Robert Hadley, Michael A. Yourkawitch, 59 of Bernville, was driving along the road at 6 p.m. when he went off the side for unknown reasons and was thrown from the vehicle as it tipped.
Yourkawitch was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wayne County Coroner’s Office. He was not seat belted into the UTV when it crashed. BEACH LAKE — Another holiday weekend wreck involving two motorcycles and two cars earned a Honesdale couple a helicopter ride to Scranton’s Community Medical Çenter (CMC) Saturday; one of them with potentially life threatening injuries.
Eric Smith and his wife Sarah were riding their motorcycle on Route 652 at about 9 p.m. when they stopped at Meadowlark Lane to wait for oncoming traffic to pass so they could make a turn.
A Kia Sedona driven by John Farley of Beach Lake rear ended the Smiths and another motorcycle ridden by Patrick and Keary Drew of Beach Lake, sending the Smiths’ bike into oncoming traffic, where they were hit by another car.
According to a report filed by Trooper Adam Kowalczyk of the Honesdale State Police Barracks, one of the victims later told investigators that Farley had been tailgating the motorcycles prior to the crash.
Both of the Smiths were life flighted to CMC — Sarah with life threatening injuries — as was Farley, though the extent of his injuries is not known at this time.
The Drews were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.
No injuries were reported from the occupants of the second car involved.
The investigating officers are still working on the case, and did not respond to calls about whether charges would be filed by press time Tuesday.
According to a family member, Eric Smith broke an arm and kneecap in the crash, but Sarah Smith “wasn’t so lucky.”
She remains in Intensive Care at CMC.
