We are currently witnessing the moral equivalent of the actions of the Freedom Riders of the 1960s. My heart is with the brave men and women aboard the flotilla who are risking their lives to bring humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. Ever since a supposedly democratic election yielded an outcome which the Israeli authorities did not like, the people of Gaza have been imprisoned in an illegal occupation. Access to adequate food, medical and other supplies is withheld by the surrounding Israeli authorities.
Last year’s flotilla resulted in the murder of nine peaceful, unarmed people, including one American citizen, in a blatant act of Israeli terrorism on the high seas. Although Israel claimed, as always, that the actions of its commandoes in shooting nine unarmed people were taken in “self defense,” the evidence is overwhelming that this was an act of mass murder preplanned by the Netanyahu government. The intent was to show by example that anyone who resists Israel’s brutal and ongoing crimes, in other words, anyone who takes seriously the teachings of Christ and the rule of law, will be murdered without consequences.
Like the Freedom Riders, the Gaza flotilla members are being persecuted and obstructed by the U.S. and Israeli governments. Two of the ships have been sabotaged and a third sits in a Greek port, docked by bogus claims of “unseaworthiness.” In a truly disgusting and depraved moment, a U.S. senator named Mark Kirk has called for U.S. Special Forces to attack the flotilla. I am outraged beyond words at how our politicians now feel comfortable brazenly abandoning even the pretense of respect for the law and human decency.
The Freedom Riders were instrumental in creating widespread awareness of the brutality of enforced segregation. I hope and pray that the Gaza flotilla succeeds in exposing Israel for the monstrous, criminal, terrorist entity that it is and always has been.
