Gardening column: How to get rid of hungry slugs without hurting garden plants
The summer solstice is upon us. The hot temperatures and almost daily rain showers have made the air humid and the soil underneath my prize hostas (and other shade-loving plants) the perfect environment for slugs to multiply and divide.
Here are tips on understanding these critters, then ridding yourself and your soil of a few of them this summer:
♦Here are slug facts from www.ghorganics.com/page13.html : “Slugs are hermaphrodites: They all have male and female reproductive systems. They can stretch to 20 times their normal length, enabling them to squeeze through tiny openings to get at food. Slugs can follow slime trails they left from the night before. Other slugs can also pick up on this same trail, creating a slug network to the host plants!
“Slugs and snails actually both have shells. Slugs' shells are much smaller and not visible as they are underneath the flesh on their back. Slug eggs are in the soil just about everywhere. They can be there for years and then hatch when conditions are right. It actually takes moisture to allow them to hatch. To identify the eggs, look for oval-shaped, white eggs in moist soil areas and under rocks and boards. Eggs are laid in clusters of two dozen eggs each. The adults also overwinter in the soil and can live for many years.”
Lettuce and cabbage are favorite foods of slugs and snails, but, as we are all aware, they will eat just about anything, especially hostas. Rather than wait for this to happen, you can go into action now.
♦There are several tried-and-true, environmentally safe methods of protecting your plants, and a few that have yet to be tested:
Diatomaceous earth is a reasonably priced slug eliminator and can be purchased at most garden centers. Best of all, it is not harmful to humans, pets or beneficial insects. When sprinkled on the soil or on the plant, slugs and snails crawl over it to reach their meal and, in the process, the diatomaceous particles rip their underbelly open and they die.
Another method is to pour a little beer in a shallow cup and nestle it in the soil under the plant so they can crawl in, but they can't crawl out. Empty this every day and keep an eye on the dog, especially if he or she has a taste for beer.
Using some yeast and a little sugar in water in a shallow cup works much the same as the beer. I discovered yeast by itself works fine, but can become nasty smelling if not emptied regularly.
