Getting Touchy Over Sanitation

A new market research report published by MarketsandMarkets.com says that the touchless sensing market (meaning the hands-free technology we are familiar with in restrooms today) is expected to reach $3656.8 million by 2015 at a CAGR of 27.6 percent. According to this report, the touchless sensing market has gained momentum and that "The companies are realizing the potential of this market and answering the customer needs regarding better hygienic factors." There's no doubt that touchless sanitary equipment is becoming ubiquitous, as faucets, soap dispensers, towel dispensers and hand dryers have all become electronic and are designed to prevent cross-contamination.

The timing of this report is interesting because APIC, SHEA and ASHE just announced a joint position statement on electronic faucets, which you can read by clicking HERE . As the statement explains, "Recent conflicting study results have illuminated the need for further assessment to determine when it is appropriate to use such faucets in healthcare facilities. A recent abstract from the Johns Hopkins Health System discussing research on their local experience led to much media coverage of electronic faucet use and instigated a review of the state of the art by professional organizations." The organizations have formed a stakeholders coalition to increase overall knowledge of biofilm in clinical settings; gain clinical and technical support to help assess infection control issues associated with manual and electronic faucets; and gather data on the use of faucets, particularly sensor-regulated faucets, in the healthcare environment. It's disheartening to think that technology meant to create a more sanitary environment could have some troubling implications for infection control, and the community will have to wait for further study to be undertaken.
