Ten new firefighters graduate from Salem County Fire Academy

CARNEYS POINT TWP. — Ten new volunteers graduated from the Salem County Fire Academy at a ceremony held on June 7 at the Davidow Theater of Salem Community College here.

The firefighters celebrated completing 175 rigorous hours of training, which spanned more than five months, Salem County Fire Academy Director Leroy Pierce said in a press release.

Each of the graduates now holds a New Jersey Division of Fire Safety Firefighter One certificate.

The first class of Firefighter One recruits from the Salem County Vocational Technical School’s Law and Public Safety program graduated during this ceremony.

The 10 new firefighters from the Fire Academy were trained in basic education and skills, as well as military decorum, physical training and military drill.

Pierce said that military training instills a sense of pride, teamwork and camaraderie, as well as reinforcing the concepts of respect and command structure that is integral to fire service.

Pierce said that the firefighters graduated in front of friends, family, fellow firefighters, and dignitaries.

The class was brought into the theater by members of the Camden County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums.

The invocation was delivered by Salem County Freeholder Dale Cross, and was followed by a tribute to fallen firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of others.

Former Salem Battalion Chief Jack Ayars also sang a rendition of “Some Gave All” as a tribute to all members of the military and SPC Richard Emmons III, a Salem County native who was recently killed in action in Afghanistan.

Salem County Freeholder Bruce Bobbitt also offered words of congratulations to the graduating class and thanked the volunteer firefighters for their dedication to the county.

Jason Helder, principal at the Vo-Tech, thanked the academy and its staff for their commitment to the new partnership of firefighter training, and expressed personal pride
for the students from his school who graduated.

The Public Service Electric and Gas Nuclear Fire Department then presented an award to one firefighter who displayed the highest level of dedication and commitment to his or her education.

The PSEG Nuclear Fire Department Instructors Award was given to Firefighter CJ Catalano of Reliance Fire Co. in Woodstown.
