James River expedition targets Civil War shipwrecks

"The remains of the USS Cumberland and CSS Florida, preserved in the waters of Hampton Roads, remind us of the sacrifices made during the Civil War and give us a unique and rare opportunity to explore a pivotal chapter in our nation's history," said David Alberg, superintendent of NOAA's Newport News-based Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.

"NOAA is pleased to be part of a project that increases understanding of America's maritime heritage."

Stationed in Hampton Roads as part of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, the 50-gun Cumberland was the first ship sunk by the marauding Virginia.

More than 120 men went down with the vessel after it was rammed by the Confederate ironclad, and the site is protected under federal law as a war grave.

Though the last survey of the wreck took place in 2007, the ship has been the subject of several research expeditions in the past as well as the target of illegal artifact hunting.

Numerous artifacts — including gun and cannon parts, glassware and a belt buckle — are on display at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum inNorfolk.

The Florida captured nearly 40 merchant ships during its notorious career and was the subject of an international dispute with Brazil — where it was seized by Union forces in an illegal raid — when it sank under a cloud of controversy.

Protected by U.S. law, it was surveyed in 2005 and 2007.

"We are extremely excited about this project," said Alexis Catsambis, underwater archaeologist and cultural resource manager of the Naval History & Heritage Command.

"The information collected during this project will really increase our understanding of the condition of these wrecks.
