Cover letter should be specific

Writing a cover letter can be the hardest letter you ever write. So many of you want to write one letter and have that apply to every job you apply for, but that doesn't work. Your letter should be written specifically for each job you are interested in.

When you sit down to write your cover letter, take time to send certain bits of information. Your cover letter should answer the question "Why should I hire you?" It should grab the interviewer's attention and help them see why you, above everyone else, should be considered for the job.

The first paragraph should be the "why I'm writing to you" paragraph. You should tell them how you heard about the position if it's a mutual contact; no need to say you saw the position online.

Use this paragraph to briefly tell them why you are interested in the position or organization.

The second paragraph is the "Why I'm qualified" paragraph. Tell them about some of your relevant experience and qualities that relate to their position. Give them a few -- two or three, not 12 -- specific examples of your accomplishments with descriptions to support your examples. This is the paragraph that needs to be tweaked for each employer.

The first sentence of the second paragraph needs to be a hard-hitting starter. These interviewers read so many of these letters daily and your letter needs to stand out.

Don't just reiterate the verbiage from your resume. Give them examples of your experience that makes you stand out from the rest of the applicants.

The final sentence is a summary of what you have told them. This is when I would say something like, "Therefore, I feel I would be a strong candidate for the position of XYZ with ABC company." Bring the reader back to thinking about you working for their company.

Finally, the last paragraph is a short two to four sentence paragraph. Refer to your enclosed resume, request an interview and let them know you will be in touch within the next week. Please remember to thank them for their time and consideration.

Avoid using too many sentences that start with "I." Instead, make yourself the subject of each sentence such as, "With this internship, I demonstrated..." Be sure to check your grammar, spelling and punctuation. And please sign your letter. Let the person know you cared to sign and confirm that the letter was personalized from you to them.

Another point, if you use the same letter, when you make a copy, make sure it's lined up properly on the machine so it doesn't appear obvious as a copy.

There will be many keys to a good resume and this is something that you will want to explore. You need a good resume and cover letter to hand out to employers.

You have to work very hard for a job these days and this can be very different from the way it used to be. Many people are settling for jobs that they do not necessarily want because the job market is so competitive. You want to increase the odds that you can get the job that you want and not that you are forced to settle upon.

Your resume can be the tool that helps you to really stand out and this can be what an employer is looking for. If you take your resume seriously, an employer might think that you are more willing to take your employment seriously as well. This can be a good sign for an employer if you are willing to put the hard work into your resume.

You want your resume to be readable and you should refrain from font that is too small. A smaller font is not recommended and you want the person reading it not to have any problems. If someone is struggling to read your resume, they might give up entirely. Employers often get many resumes when a job opens up and they will not waste their time.

If you have been considering a design for your resume, you might want to think again. Designs on your resume can be considered tacky and this might be a major turn off for the reader. You want to keep your resume on a very professional note and this means refraining from designs or colors.

References should be included only if they are requested. You can make your references on another sheet and this is something that not many employers will request. Your references should be in chronological order and this can help you to keep things straight and this is something that an employer will appreciate as well. Your references should be clear and updated as needed.
