Bill Knapp is nearing another landmark birthday, so it's time for another big-country barn dance.
The real estate magnate and community leader will turn 85 on July 18. On the 30th, singer Randy Travis, 52, will croon for Knapp and an expected guest list of more than 200 people, said Gerry Neugent, president and chief operating officer of Knapp Properties.
In 2001, Willie Nelson performed at Knapp's 75th birthday party, which also marked the 80th birthday of the late David Kruidenier, former Des Moines Register publisher and fellow civic leader.
The party's setting will be at the "Bluffs," Knapp's country retreat, where he has a nearly 100-year-old party barn. It's adjacent to the land he donated for the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.
Neugent said Knapp is "doing terrific," playing golf three or four times a week.

Cohan traces the 142-year history of the investment bank, up through the role it played in the global financial collapse of 2008.
He gets inside Goldman's corporate culture and explains the financial collapse from the viewpoint of Goldman traders who were among the first to realize in late 2006 that the housing boom was unsustainable, and who quickly figured out in 2007 how to profit from the collapse.
Understanding the Goldman culture does not excuse the company's huge moral lapse, but it does provide a context for the investment bank's duplicitous treatment of clients who were kept in the dark while Goldman made money shorting the mortgage bonds that it was selling to those same clients.
An early version of that duplicity occurred at the time of the Penn Central bankruptcy in 1970. Goldman was selling the bonds at a time when it should have been obvious to the investment bank that the railroad was in serious financial trouble.
One of the clients that purchased Penn Central bonds was Younkers, the Des Moines-based department store chain, which held $500,000 of the bonds. After the railroad sought bankruptcy, investors filed 40 lawsuits against Goldman, Cohan wrote.
The amount sought in the suits could have wiped out Goldman, but the bank was successful during the years that followed in settling many of the lawsuits. The only one it did not settle involved Younkers.
