DANVERS — Brian Harrison flew four days solo on the roof of McKinnon's butcher shop on Holten Street this year.

For more than a decade, Harrison and his brothers have spent several days each year camping out on buildings in what they call a "rooftop retreat" to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis.

They do so in memory of Harrison's nephew Patrick, who died from the disease in 1999. The idea for the fundraiser started about 12 years ago when Harrison's brother Billy retreated to the top of the Toys R Us in Peabody.

For the past several years, Brian Harrison, a Danvers native, and his brother Jerry, Patrick's father, have stood on the top of McKinnon's for four days straight to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

They also camp out to help Nicole Harrison, Brian Harrison's 15-year-old daughter. The Danvers High freshman is also dealing with the genetic disease that causes mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive tract. She was diagnosed at age 5.

This year, Jerry Harrison was unable to make the retreat, so Brian Harrison stepped up to do the fundraiser solo.

"All the amenities and everything is on the roof," Brian Harrison said. This year, a cold front blew through town around 9 a.m. Friday, and the wind tore away the awning of his tent "and my pride," Harrison said. Tents pitched on the roof are held there by bricks.

Harrison is able to gain access to the roof because he works as a salesman, and one of his customers is McKinnon's Market. He is also close with the owners, the Penta family, and two of his children, Erica, 19, and Sean, 17, work there.

To pass the time during his four-day vigil, Harrison worked on his laptop.

Library Director, Peabody Institute Library of Danvers, Danvers, MA

Due to an upcoming retirement of a long serving director in October of 2011, there is a unique opportunity to lead the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers. Qualified applicants are invited to submit their applications as detailed below.

The Town of Danvers, a residential community of approximately 25,000 residents is located less than 20 miles north of Boston. Convenient access to recreational areas such as beaches and mountains; and ease of travel by all major highways to events in Boston makes Danvers a highly attractive residential community.

An elected Board of Trustees oversees the operations of the library. The Library Director reports to the Board of Trustees, but also has a close working relationship with all town departments. Danvers has a representative town meeting form of government with a Board of Selectmen and a Town Manager. An example of the close working relationship with other town departments is that maintenance and custodial functions at the library are performed by a division of the Town’s Public Works Department. There is also a close working relationship with the School Department in providing services and materials for all educational levels.

The Peabody Institute Library of Danvers, founded with a gift from benefactor George Peabody in 1856, is housed in a unique Georgian Revival style building. An exterior renovation was completed in early 2000. The 27,000 square foot building includes a community meeting room, children’s room, and reference and circulation areas. The Danvers Archival Center is also a department of the Library. The Archival Center houses all the written and printed materials relating to the history of Danvers and Salem Village, Massachusetts.

The Position of Library Director

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in library management, preferably as the director. A Masters Degree in Library Science is required, with at least five years of progressive library management experience. Demonstrated experience in fiscal management and staff supervision is critical. Understanding of, and proficiency with, the latest electronic technology is essential. As this is a highly visible position, with extensive public contact, the individual will have a demonstrated record of effective community relations. Depending upon qualifications and experience the expected salary range will be $65,000-$72,000 with a comprehensive benefits package.
