Welcome to Canada Town

A new Canadian arrives in this country from a faraway land, knowing little about his adopted home.

If you took this newcomer on a tour of just one city, one that best represents what Canada is all about, where would you go?

Hamilton is arguably the most Canadian city of all. Toronto? Too big to represent Canada; it aspires to be New York. Montreal? Great place, but too European to be distinctively Canuck. Vancouver? Either too laid back or too violent, depending on the day. And not enough snow.

Hamilton? A border city (about 80 per cent of Canadians live a couple hours drive from the U.S.), ethnically diverse, sufficiently frigid winters, plus varied Canadian geography that includes a lake, harbour, beach, mountain, valleys, and 140 waterfalls.

Hamilton is Canada Town. So let’s take our newbie on a tour of the most quintessentially Canadian spots in the city. See this city, see the country. We will employ a Canadian invention, the Top Ten List, to take the tour. (OK, American TV personality David Letterman may have popularized top ten lists, but his Canadian sidekick Paul Shaffer played the music).

Moving roughly west to east, in the wilds of Ancaster we find No. 10: Griffin House .

“Sorry, never heard of it,” says a young man jogging a half-kilometre away from this National Historic Site, which is nestled in the woods off Mineral Springs Road.

Griffin House may be underappreciated as a tourist destination, but it is a poignant symbol of Canada’s role in the Underground Railroad, through which African-Americans fled slavery.

One of those former slaves lived in this modest clapboard house. His name was Enerals Griffin, born in chains in Virginia, and who ultimately fled oppression in Ohio for southern Ontario, buying this house in 1834 along with his wife, Priscilla. He cleared 12 acres and planted wheat, oats, Indian corn, beans and an orchard garden.

At its best, Canada has been a refuge for the oppressed from other lands. Americans trumpet their history of welcoming the “tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” but it was Canada that welcomed those who couldn’t find that freedom, even in the United States.

Today, there are many palatial estates in this bucolic part of Ancaster that would impress an immigrant arriving in Canada. But perhaps none are as impressive as Enerals Griffin’s humble place.
