My foot is fine. I called Charlie Hill, a fellow retired firefighter, and said let's go fishing. Not wanting to burn any daylight, we were on the water by 6:30.
Now I'm not sure my trolling motor trouble is because I'm jinxed or Charlie is bad luck. He was with me last month when my trolling motor quit after one day. That time I made the long haul to Bass Pro and they gave me another one. I put it on and have fished with no problem since then -- that's until Charlie got in the boat Tuesday.
We fished for about a half hour and everything was fine. I hit the stomp switch and the motor didn't work. Same problem as before: everything worked but the motor. Being on the water we just let the wind drift us and used the big motor to position us the best I could. This plays heck with your presentation. Boat control is very important in fishing windy conditions. Plus with the clear skies, motor noise wasn't a big help in our catching fish. While you can catch some fish drifting, boat control should be a very important part of your fishing plan.
Boat control lets you work a good spot from different angles, hold yourself in one spot and thoroughly cover a log or other structure. Properly used, a trolling motor can increase your chances of catching versus fishing. While most of us can use a trolling motor to fish along a bank or around boathouses or visible brush when not much wind is blowing, holding in a good spot in the wind without constantly over-running your trolling motor is like other fishing skills; it takes time to get good at it. Now a new fishing aid called Power Pole mounted on the backs of boats is being used to hold a boat in position in water up to 12 feet deep without running the trolling motor.
I want to thank the guys at the new Premier Texas Boating center in Denison on Loy Lake Road. After I called them, MotorGuide said that I needed to take it to a certified repair shop. Having gone through this not long ago, I balked at another 200-mile drive and got pretty adamant about the whole deal.
The man at MotorGuide said they could send me a new head, but the catch was, they could not mail it to me. They could only mail it to a Premier Mercury dealer. I explained as far as I knew the closest one was in Gainesville and I didn't think I should have to drive that far either.
