In Defense of In-N-Out
As a resident of Southern California, I’m pretty aware of the stereotypes the Golden Coast has to offer. To the untrained eye and even in that California commercial with Jay Leno and Vanessa Williams , it might appear as though all anyone out here does is tan and shop on Rodeo Drive, drive down the PCH to go surfing in Malibu, and frequent Disneyland with an annual pass. If you happen to work in the entertainment industry, then non-California residents might imagine you live out life like an episode of Entourage . I’m name dropping like crazy here…all par for the idealized course.
There are some myths that can be debunked though. Not all of the girls out here don Daisy Dukes with bikinis on top (contrary to what Katy Perry will have you believe) and it does rain occasionally, causing driving scares all up and down the 101 freeway. But no matter what the stereotypes for or against California say, we all come together on one mainstay so iconic, there’s an arrow designed in the logo to point you there.
In-N-Out Burger.
Founded in 1948 by a husband and wife duo Harry and Esther Synder in Baldwin Park, California, In-N-Out Burger has locations all throughout the West in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The restaurant chain lives by simplicity- whether by the punchy song lyrics of the restaurant ( “In-N-Out! In-N-Out! That’s what a hamburger is all about!” ) to the easy menu of burgers, fries, and shakes to order from.
Simplicity is key for the burger chain which CNN just crowned the nation’s fast food favorite . What makes it tops in the fast food game? The restaurant prides itself on the high quality and fresh ingredients used in making burgers and fries. Real ice cream is used for the shakes and there are no microwaves or freezers.
Servers at In-N-Out provide fast service, both in the restaurant and in the drive-through. Even well into the wee morning hours (open until 1am daily) the service remains top-notch. There are also perks to working within the world of In-N-Out including a not-so-secret menu available online to check out and an entire set of burger jargon for those in the know (trust me, “animal style” is delicious).
A privately owned company, the Synder family has no plans to make a franchise or public company out of In-N-Out. However, they have been following a controlled growth strategy in expanding locations. With over 200 in California and 50 in other Western states, In-N-Out has recently expanding to locations within Texas. The opening in Frisco, Texas on May 11th caused a media sensation with lines of cars for hours patiently waiting in the drive-thru, overnight campouts to be one of the first to get a burger bite, and yes, even tears that were shed by one happy former Californian for those tasty, tasty cheeseburgers.
