MTV's The Real World San Diego, Poses Real Problems

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you. MTV ’s hit reality show “The Real World” returned to “America’s Finest City.” Unfortunately, they were greeted with mixed feelings.

Real world San Diego returned for their 26th season and rented a multi-million dollar house in the quiet residential neighborhood of Bird Rock, just south of La Jolla. The idea for the show remains the same: seven culturally-diverse young strangers living together in the house for the summer, with the cameras filming their every move. The show prides itself on the personal relationships and how they transpire.

The last time ”The Real World” filmed in San Diego, was back in 2004, a season which featured two arrests and a sexual assault investigation. So there is no real argument as to why residents are fed up. Most of the neighbors interviewed said there was no notice. Nothing informing them that they will have some young partying neighbors for the summer. Oh, and they will be filming a reality show to boot.

Since learning of this news, traffic has increased on this quiet dead-end street with random people flocking to get a glimpse of the house and the cast in it.

Neighbor Jeff Prescott, just a few doors down has lived on the street for over 33 years and has real concerns over the increased traffic, noise pollution and overall safety factors with regards to the random visitors to the street. “Anything that brings attention, I don’t like. We can object on moral grounds here.” His son Spencer, just 17, has a “youthful optimism” attitude towards his new neighbors and mentioned that the Real World was “Not really a reality show” because we all live this everyday, just with no cameras around.

Dawn Turner, another neighbor just a few doors down has the same concerns about the traffic and potential drunks hanging out around the house. But she also mentioned “It might be kinda fun” to have them around this summer. When I spoke to her son Cole, who is 16, he said, “It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.” Another neighbor just across the street that wanted to remain anonymous, mentioned their concern for the increased traffic and the drunks because he has young children and worries about their safety.

When a Real World San Diego staff member came out to speak with me, he gave me his version, then said “No comment” for the record. He doesn’t have to live there though. Executive Producer of the show, Jonathan Murray said, “We’re excited to return to San Diego, a city that has always been a magnet for young people with its beautiful beaches, sunny skies, laidback lifestyle and welcoming spirit.” Well Jonathan doesn’t have to live there either.

Ahhhh..fourth year course selection. Can I just never enter the real world please? Unless it involves an MTV camera crew and a big paycheck.
