31 same-sex couples ready to wed in Falls

 Lynch and Korn are among 31 same-sex couples who have signed on to participate in what representatives from the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. believe will be the first group ceremony of its kind since last month’s passage of the Marriage Equality Act. Representatives from the tourism agency have now officially set the date. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Monday on Goat Island near the brink of the American and Bridal Veil Falls.   NTCC officials are expecting the ceremony to draw not only the couples who are getting married, but dozens of family members and friends interested in sharing the occasion. They are also expecting the event to attract media attention from across the state and country, helping to promote Niagara Falls as a destination for those thinking about getting married or newlyweds who might be looking for a spot to honeymoon. “We feel it’s the first official group wedding across the entire state,” said John Percy, NTCC’s president and CEO. “We’ve done our research to find out if other destinations or locations are doing a group wedding. (New York City) Mayor Bloomberg is marrying two of his staff members and I know there are other weddings planned but, as far as a group wedding to celebrate this passage, we believe we are the first official across the state.”  Gov. Cuomo Andrew Cuomo signed the Marriage Equality Act into law on June 24, giving same sex couples the opportunity to be wed under the law. Shortly after the act became official, representatives from NTCC issued a global invitation to same-sex couples, encouraging them to tie the knot near the world-famous waterfalls. The call has so far been answered by 31 same-sex couples who have RSVP’d for the event. Several couples are from Niagara and Erie counties. Others will be arriving from Syracuse, Rochester, Ohio and northern Pennsylvania. Percy hopes the exposure will provide a significant boost to ongoing efforts to grow the local tourism economy.   “It’s going to highlight the destination and show that we are a welcoming destination for all couples to be married here — heterosexual or same sex couples — and a honeymoon destination as well,” Percy said. “We want to be welcoming to all and I think that was the main goal and the mission of this was to highlight that Niagara Falls, USA is ready for same-sex marriage and that we are welcoming to all participants.

The Summit

The Summit (formerly the Summit Park Mall) is a 800,000 square feet (75,000 square meters) shopping mall located in Wheatfield, New York, about seven miles (11km) from the Falls and from Canada. The mall opened with great fanfare in 1972 and then expanded in 1979, with 5 large anchor tenants: Sears, AM&A’s, later purchased by The Bon-Ton, Hens & Kelly, a 30,000square feet (2,800m2) Child World, later purchased by Toys “” Us, and Jenss. There were also two midsized tenants McCrory & Co and The Sample Shop. The mall did extremely well through the ’70s, ’80s, and early ’90s.For a brief time Macys operated MCO (Macys Closeout) in the former Hens & Kelly space. But in the early ’90s the regional department store Sample Shop closed, the value of the Canadian dollar began to drop, at the same time as the advent of power centers, category killer big box stores, and Wal-Mart’s expansion; these factors combined to slaughter the malls of the 1970s and ’80s. In 1998 regional department store Jenss left the mall and the space remained vacant until 2005.

In 2005 the mall got a new image, and the name changed to The Summit. The interiors are now extensively skylit with open ceilings and new lighting. The exteriors have been upgraded with new improved access and canopied entries, along with new landscaping and lighting. Also in 2005 a new anchor came to the mall; Steve and Barry’s, which opened in the former Jenss. In early 2006 anchor Toys “” Us decided it would leave the mall.In 2007 Save-A-Lot announced it would replace Toys R Us. Also in 2007 Rainbow Shops opened a large location near The Bon Ton. (Rainbow pulled out, however, in 2009).

Mall redeveloper Jim Anthony, of Anthony & Co. ONCOR International in Raleigh, North Carolina was hoping to re-tenant the property with local and regional tenants, while creating “Niagara’s Indoor Downtown”. Anthony’s plan included creating premiere “micro-retailing” experiences such as the Niagara Emporium and Van Winkles Crafts, where local crafts and gift makers can sell their often handmade wares in a co-op environment.
