The Natural Gardener

Garden tours: All-star lineup

Tom DeGree got hooked on garden tours about 10 years ago after attending a few with his mother. She's no longer here to join him, but he still makes a point of attending two or three tours every summer.

"It's a way to see what's new," he said. "There are a lot of really cool new plants." He enjoys chatting with gardeners and bringing home ideas to try in his own garden, which was featured on the St. Croix Garden Tour a few years ago. "Then there's the awe and spectacle of seeing gardens I'm never going to have," he added.

Dorothy Kleinbeck, a "passionate gardener" in Bloomington, makes time every year to attend the Bright Gardens for Fraser tour. "The designs and colors are breathtaking," she said. "My garden is not very large, but it's fun to compare what I have with what I see."

If you love gardens, July is your Super Bowl, the ultimate spectator event of Minnesota's all-too-brief growing season. It's garden-tour month, when some of the Twin Cities' best-looking landscapes are grouped together and opened to the public, often to benefit nonprofit organizations.

This year, the variety of tour options is wider than ever, with tours focused on water gardens and environmentally friendly landscapes, as well as great-looking gardens in general.

"A lot more people are into gardening," DeGree said. "They're more aware of the impact of rain gardens, and they realize the serenity of having a garden and working in the garden."

Here's a sampling of tours coming up:

This weekend

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Auxiliary is hosting its 27th annual garden tour on July 10, 12 and 13. The four gardens featured this year include two fairy gardens, a "lifestyle garden" and a back-yard retreat. Guests will travel between gardens by bus, and the tour includes brunch (Sunday) or lunch (Tuesday/Wednesday). The cost is $55, and different time slots are available, although many are already sold out. For information, call 612-625-9865 or visit www.arboretum.umn.edu.

Also July 10 is the Red Wing Garden Tour , a self-guided tour of six gardens, enhanced by the presence of master gardeners, plein air artists (those who paint on location outdoors) and live music. Tickets are available at the Red Wing Arts Association or at the gardens on the day of the tour. $15. 1-651-388-7569.

Engagements at the Natural Gardener in Austin, TX Lindsay ...

Right away at our initial meeting when I heard that Lindsay and Marshall met through their love of gardening, I immediately felt like we should incorporate that in to their engagement sessions. Before I knew it, we were meeting up at The Natural Gardener in South Austin. I literally had no idea what to expect, having never ever gardened myself and therefore, having never been to a huge gardening supply store.

It was beautiful. There were plants everywhere, colors everywhere, a random goat house, tree swing, beautiful pots.. I could go on. I felt inspired right away by the location and lucky to have clients who love to try places that mean something special.
